New support for youth in Sarajevo

Over the past few years, the real estate market in Sarajevo has recorded continuous growth in both sales and the rental sector. Rising square-meter prices and stretched budgets for young couples have become key challenges for anyone trying to independently solve their housing needs.

To ease these financial pressures, the Government of Sarajevo Canton passed a new Decision on subsidizing part of the rent for an apartment or house for young couples.

Below is a detailed overview of this measure, the application requirements, and its long-term implications for the capital's real estate dynamics.

What does the subsidy offer?

A total of 300,000 BAM has been allocated through the Sarajevo Canton Budget for this purpose. The decision provides direct financial support to young married and cohabiting couples via monthly subsidies.

• Subsidy amount: 300 BAM per month (or up to the actual rent amount if the agreed rent is lower than 300 BAM).

• Support duration: Paid over 12 months.

• Strategic framework: Part of the Sarajevo Canton Youth Strategy (2024–2030) and the document "New Housing Policy Frameworks for Youth in Sarajevo Canton until 2030," aiming to systematically ease the housing transition for young people.

Who is eligible and what are the requirements?

The support is intended for young couples planning or already building their home in a rented property within Sarajevo Canton.

To qualify, applicants must meet the following basic criteria:

• Age: Both partners must be between 18 and 35 years old.

• Citizenship and residence: BiH citizenship and continuous residence in Sarajevo Canton for at least three years.

• Formal lease agreement: A concluded and notarized lease agreement for an apartment or house in Sarajevo Canton for a period of at least 12 months.

How will scoring be conducted?

The candidate ranking list will be formed based on clear criteria:

• Number of household members,

• Total monthly income per household member,

• Level of education,

• Agreed rent amount,

• Additional points are awarded to special categories, including children of civilian victims of war, members of families of fallen soldiers, and persons with disabilities.

Practical steps: How to apply?

The Ministry of Utility Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction, and Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton will publish a Public Call in the coming period, which will remain open for at least 30 days.

Advice for applicants: Prepare all necessary documentation in advance, paying special attention to the legal validity of the lease agreement. The contract must be clearly defined and signed for a minimum of one year, which also encourages legal frameworks and stability in the rental market.
